Do cultural capital and social capital matter for economic performance? An empirical investigation of tribal agriculture in New Caledonia

This paper proposes an empirical investigation of the impact social relations, referred to as structural capital, and cultural values, intangible on tribal agricultural production in New Caledonia. By using microdata from original survey communities, we construct a simultaneous equations model explore mechanisms by which values relations interact with performance. Several findings emerge this study. First, performance (production yield) is result and, simultaneously, explanatory factor highlighting limited substitutability between these two sources wealth (agriculture capital). Second, appear be thus indirectly affect economic Moreover, our results suggest that complementarity forms capital essential for extensification—maintenance/scaling up—of agriculture (crop production) even more intensification (performance, i.e. crop activity persistence ties.
